This is changing for you

Since January 1, 2025, it has been mandatory for every company in Germany to be able to receive electronic invoices (e-invoices for short) for domestic B2B sales.

From 1 January 2027, the obligation to send e-invoices will apply to domestic companies with a previous year's turnover of more than €800,000 that exchange invoices for their taxable and taxable sales with other domestic companies (B2B).

Excluded from this are, among other things, tickets and small-value invoices.

From 1 January 2028, the obligation to send e-invoices applies to all companies based in Germany , with the exception of small businesses.

What is an e-invoice?

With an e-invoice (unlike a PDF), a machine-readable XML data record (according to EU standard EN 16931) is created, which can be transmitted, further processed and archived in the formats XRechnung (pure data record) or ZUGFeRD (additional view PDF).

E-invoicing has been mandatory for B2G (Business to Government) transactions since 2020. EU pioneer Italy has also been benefiting from the introduction of e-invoicing for some time.

The advantages at a glance

1. Optimized work processes

Digital invoice documents enable seamless processes and accelerate the approval process, even across different departments and locations. Your accounts payable becomes more strategic and efficient.

2. Time savings

Error-prone manual data entry is eliminated, which increases accounting quality and creates more time for value-added tasks.

3. Cost savings

E-invoicing eliminates costs for paper, envelopes, printing, postage, folders, and filing cabinets, resulting in savings of up to 60 percent.

4. Increased transparency

Employees have cloud access to documents at any time, which improves the ability to provide information and collaboration with tax advisors.

5. Improved liquidity planning

Faster processing of incoming invoices enables cash discounts and provides a better overview of expenses. Electronic delivery accelerates payment receipts and reduces dunning rates.
